7 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Floral Business (Raw Unfiltered Thoughts From Amy)
0 commentsWhen I started The Hidden Garden, I had a vision: creating breathtaking floral designs and bringing beauty into people’s lives. What I didn’t realize? There’s a lot more to this business than just flowers. Looking back, there are 7 things I wish someone had told me before jumping in.
If you’re thinking about starting your own floral business (or already in the thick of it), these lessons might just save you time, stress, and a few too many sleepless nights. 🌼
1. Perishables Are Challenging
Flowers aren’t just pretty—they’re delicate. 🌺 You need to understand how long they last, how to care for them, and how to price them properly. Running out of blooms? Disaster. Ordering too much? Money down the drain. Learning the balance is everything.
2. Staffing, Staffing, Staffing!
Your team will make or break you. In my early years, I made a few not-so-great hires—some too soon, some too late. And honestly? Sometimes I still get it wrong. But when you find the right people, they make all the difference. 👍
3. Mentors Matter
No one builds a business alone. 💡 I wish I had found a mentor sooner—someone to guide me, challenge me, and help me avoid common mistakes. Whether it’s a coach, a mastermind group, or an industry veteran, find someone who’s been there.
4. Systems & Processes Save You Time (and Sanity)
For years, everything lived in my head. Orders, schedules, pricing—it was just my way. I was running around constantly, putting out fires. 🔥 If I had learned about systems earlier, I would have saved myself so much stress. Get organized early.
5. Not Every Client is a Good Fit
In the beginning, I said “yes” to everything. Weddings, events, corporate accounts—anyone who wanted flowers, I was there. But not every client is your client. Learning to say “no” to the wrong ones makes room for the right ones. ✨
6. You Will Burn Out If You Don’t Set Boundaries
Floral design isn’t just a business—it’s a passion. 💕 But passion doesn’t pay the bills (or give you sleep). 😴 Late nights, last-minute orders, impossible demands—I learned the hard way that you must set limits, or you’ll run yourself into the ground.
7. This Industry is About Relationships
Yes, flowers are important. 🌸 But your relationships with vendors, clients, and your team? That’s what builds a long-lasting business. Treat people well, and they’ll come back. Simple as that.
If I had known these lessons years ago, I could have saved myself so much trial and error. But I’m sharing them now—so maybe you won’t have to learn them the hard way.
